On the morning of December 1, 2024, members of SLS China from across the country gathered at Rock Church in Shenzhen to deliver health lectures, first aid training, and a free clinic for participants attending the United Communion Sunday service. This special medical service event was held to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Saint Luke Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Clinic in Shenzhen. The event, chaired by Dr. Zheng Shunwen, the representative of SLS China, welcomed approximately 60 participants.
Dr. Zheng began by presenting the results of a health survey conducted in Shenzhen the previous week, which collected 32 valid responses. The survey identified the congregation’s key health concerns, and the SLS China medical team prepared the service event accordingly, combining their medical expertise with the survey findings.
The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Wen Bin from the Saint Luke TCM Clinic in Shenzhen. Recognizing that many attendees were white-collar professionals, Dr. Wen addressed common neck, back, and joint pain issues. He shared preventive measures and relief strategies, including adjusting daily habits, TCM diet therapy, health exercises, physiotherapy, and medication. Dr. Wen then led the audience through a series of aerobics exercises, which left participants feeling stretched and noticeably relieved of pain.
The second lecture, presented by Dr. Liu Yue, a general surgeon from Hong Kong, provided an introduction to thyroid nodules—a prevalent surgical condition. Dr. Liu explained the topic comprehensively, covering the classification, incidence, symptoms, diagnostic tools such as ultrasound and thyroid function tests, treatment options (surgical and non-surgical), and prognosis. He emphasized the importance of understanding the TIRADS (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System) classification for non-specialists, enabling them to interpret thyroid ultrasound reports effectively.
Dr. Liu Yue also discussed the prevention, identification, and management of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, focusing on distinguishing chest tightness and pain symptoms indicative of the condition. He highlighted preventive measures, including maintaining a healthy routine, proper exercise, and balanced diet habits.
Following the lectures, Dr. Ouyang Yining from Shanghai conducted a hands-on CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) demonstration using medical simulators. Dr. Ouyang emphasized key points:
- Each cycle of CPR should include 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths.
- Chest compressions must have sufficient depth and frequency, with minimal breaks to maintain cerebral blood flow.
- If an AED is available, defibrillation should be performed promptly alongside effective chest compressions.
- Rescuers should position their arms perpendicular to the ground and use their body weight to minimize fatigue during chest compressions.
After the demonstration, Dr. Ouyang invited participants to practice CPR techniques, providing guidance and corrections as needed.
The event concluded with a free clinic session, during which SLS doctors provided consultations and treatments. Notably, Dr. Liu Sheng, a dermatologist from Shenzhen, utilized an ionization therapy device to treat warts and pigmented nevi, offering effective care to attendees.
SLS China gives thanks to God for guiding SLS members to Shenzhen to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the TCM Clinic and to bring physical healing to those in need. May God continue to use SLS to care for the health of the community members and lead the growth of the Saint Luke TCM Clinic. As SLS looks forward to its 7th year, they pray for greater breakthroughs and blessings to come.
